GRAPHOLOGY and the ENNEAGRAM
VOLUME II - BASIC NEEDS

by Usha Mullan

BASIC NEEDS is a companion volume to Usha Mullan's ground-breaking book, Graphology and the Enneagram: Personality in Light and Shadow.

Volume II is an enquiry into personality at the level of three primary instincts or "Basic Needs" as referred to by the author: self-preservation, sexual and social. It is once again correlated to the Enneagram and is a deepening of the author's original approach. However, it can happily stand on its own as a useful reference for graphologists wishing to grasp a personality at its most basic level.

The need for this book arose, because, as Usha Mullan confesses, she was always rather puzzled by the wide variation she encountered in the handwritings belonging to each type, despite the differences which could be expected due to the influence of the wings and the different levels of development that she has discerned.

In recent years much research has been carried out by Claudio Naranjo, M.D., and others on the question of the subtypes (as they are also sometimes labelled) or the Basic Needs. For the author, this was revelatory and answered the question of the variations within each type. It is now clear that embedded in the Enneagram is a further layer of interpretation based on the three Basic Needs.
